Freshwater mussels have a fascinating life cycle. Some species release tiny larvae that attach to fish using lures that look like small fish or insects. These fish carry the mussels upstream, helping them spread through the river system. Migratory fish like alewives play an important role in healthy river ecosystems, helping support species like freshwater mussels.
We will be joined by retired Game Warden David Georgia Jr., a Maine Warden Service Historian and storyteller, who works with the Maine Department of Marine Resources during the summer months to support sea-run fish monitoring, research, and fish passage at dams in the Penobscot River Watershed.Cheryl Daigle is the executive director of the Sebasticook Regional Land Trust. In a past position, she served as the community outreach coordinator for the Penobscot River Restoration Project for ten years, supporting removal of two dams and improved fish passage at others to restore habitat for 11 species of sea-run fish.

The Unity Library will also host a special exhibit related to river migration and freshwater species. Please walk over to the artists’ reception, held concurrently with the community art activities, to meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments.
