Resources for Planting

Basic Care of Bareroot Plants: Download Plant Care Fact Sheet

  • Planting within 72 hours

    • Keep plants in plastic bag and moisten packing material; store in a cool, dark place.
    • Soak roots in water (several hours to overnight) while you dig holes.
  • Planting within a week

    • Re-pack plants in a box or other container with drainage
    • Pack roots in moist mulch, sawdust, shredded newspaper; compress to remove air pockets
    • Keep well-moistened in cool, dark spot until ready to plant.
  • To hold plants for a longer time

    • Pot up plants in a good potting soil/compost mix; or
    • Heel-in: Dig a trench and cover plant roots with soil ; keep well-watered till ready to plant.

    • All plants on our list are hardy to at least Zone 5 and most are hardy to Zone 4 and below
    • USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: Average Annual Minimum Temperature (F)Z4: -20 to -30; Z5: -10 to -20; Z6: -10 to 0; Z7: 0 to 10.
